Greening the Abode: Sustainable Sipping

October 15, 2009

I’m kicking off Blog Action Day by sharing a new-and-improved version of a post I did a long time ago on a personal blog.

52 Million. That’s the number of meals McDonald’s serves every day. Why do I care? Why should you care?

Bear with me as I do a little bit of math.  Let’s say that  75% of those fast-food meals are served with drinks.  That means McDonald’s is sending 39 million drinking straws to the world’s landfills every day.  At that rate, that’s over 14 billion straws a year from just one fast-food chain.
Ever since I picked up a reusable metal slurpee straw at 7-11 last summer, I’ve been curious about what other resuable straw options are our there.  I stumbled upon Glass Dharma, proud makers of “the original glass straw, handmade in the USA.”   They’ve artfully crafted several varieties and sizes of reusable glass straws, from functional to fancy. Need a stirrer for your morning coffee or evening cocktail?  How about an extra-large straw for an icy smoothie?  With four sizes ranging from 7mm to 14 mm wide, there’s a sipper for every slurp.
If a plain glass straw is too boring for you, check out how Glass Dharma fancied things up a bit, adding the “Decorative Dots” and “Beautiful Bend” designs to their lineup. And with three different cases to choose from, you can now take that straw on the road with you for your next fast-food binge.
With Christmas on the horizon, wouldn’t this be a great green gift for eco-conscious friends?
Today, in honor of Blog Action Day 2009, I did something that was long overdue:  I ordered a 10″ straw.  I can’t wait for it to arrive so I can try it out!  I’ll definitely let you know what I think.

Amazing what they offer now. As far as sustainability goes (well, and frugality) I am currently considering cloth diapers (eek). I never even knew there were reusable straws!
